What does it mean to Pay it Forward? It is true selfless giving. Have you ever been in a situation where a random stranger steps into your life and does something totally wonderful and unexpected…and then like a skilled magician…disappears?
Today was a beautiful example of such an event.
If you have a thought to do something for another person, act on it…instead of thinking…”I’m just one person, what difference can I really make?” Caroline wanted to do something to help Courtney after a very serious motorcycle accident. With the support of Michaelangelo salon where she works, she organized a bake sale. Caroline contacted me to photograph the event through a mutual friend, and I am so happy to share the excitement of day one.
Not only was today about strangers doing things for others but a community coming together to help someone they didn’t even know. Teamwork at it’s best as I watched people bringing baked goods; buying; donating; sharing and bonding with each other. $2200 was raised in a short amount of time (not including online donations ).
And then, in an almost surreal moment, “Derrick” walks in, asks the price to buy everything… pays, then asks one favor…he wasn’t planning on taking anything, but rather offers Caroline 3 options:
1. sell it again and raise more money for her friend
2. take it to UCLA where Courtney is and give it to other patients
3. donate it to a shelter
then he leaves…just wanted to do something nice for someone else.
I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to make some inspirational posters for Courtney that are being signed by everyone coming to the salon. They will be hanging in her room to remind her how many people care and came to support her.
Do something random today and pay it forward – you can make a difference! You have no idea how your random act of kindness can impact someone. The words I heard today were: “This has restored my faith in humanity”. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to be kind…everyday counts.
There are good people in the world – thank you for being one of them.
Peace, love and happiness…sprinkled with gratitude
UPDATE March 03, 2013
Remarkable… amazing and incredibly special! Every part of the day… from the people I met to the feeling of “biker family” I felt for Courtney. Riding groups drove in from all over the city to show their support, and the money poured in. $7200 by the end of the day!
Often people ask “Why did this have to happen” but there is no point asking as there are no answers readily available. Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes it is easier to see that reason, and sometimes it just doesn’t seem to make sense. In speaking to so many people in the last 2 days I have heard many stories of hope, growth, strength, community and encouragement. Most of all the message that keeps coming around is one of choices, which is the foundation of this blog. Life happens – choose to be positive!!!
I feel fortunate to have been able to be involved. There will be photos posted on Facebook pages, so check back soon…in the meantime I figured I would share an overview of the past 2 days.
